Augusta National Women's Amateur: World No. 1 Rose Zhang Wins Title
Posted : 12 April 2023
After blowing a five-shot lead in the final round, world number one amateur Rose Zhang went on to win the Augusta National Women's Amateur title in a play-off.
After the first two rounds at the Champions Retreat course, close to Augusta, the 19-year-old American was 13 under par.
Zhang finished Saturday's final round at Augusta National Golf Club with a four-over-par 76 to tie Jenny Bae for the lead at nine under par.
In the sudden-death round, Zhang prevailed with a par at the second extra hole.
Zhang, who has held the top amateur ranking for 133 weeks straight said: "I'm just really proud of myself in terms of how I was able to overcome so much media, so much expectation. Going into the event everyone was talking about how I should win," said
Both players made par on the first hole of the play-off, the 18, and then their tee drives on the next hole, the 10, reached the middle of the fairway. However, Bae dragged her second ball into the bushes and could only squirt her third into a greenside bunker. Bae began the final round six strokes behind Zhang.
Zhang, the 2020 US Women's Amateur winner, had to make two putts from 25 feet after her fourth ball landed six feet from the pin. She won the first roll by rolling it to six inches.
The top 30 players and ties in the invitational tournament, which was first played in 2019, qualified for the final round at Augusta National, but all 70 of the field's female competitors played a practice round there on Friday.
On Thursday, April 6, The Masters, the first men's major of the year, gets underway.
