Augusta National Women's Amateur: With 66, Rose Zhang Leads the Field as Anna Davis is Assessed a Four-Shot Penalty

Davis receives a four-shot penalty as Zhang takes the lead in the Augusta National Women's Amateur.
Rose Zhang recorded a six-under 66 at Champions Retreat to grab a one-shot lead in the Augusta National Women's Amateur, living up to her reputation as the finest female amateur in the world. Rose Zhang played without making a bogey and handled the par fives.
It was a day to forget for the previous two champions. At age 16, Anna Davis, who took first place the previous year, was unaware that she could only lift, clean, and set her golf ball in the short grass. Her first two shots were in mild rough, and she picked up the ball on both occasions to wipe off the mud. Each of the situations resulted in a two-shot penalty.
On the fourth hole, she was informed that there would probably be a penalty. There, Davis made a double-bogey. "If you look at my score on four, you'll see how it affected me," she said with a smile.
"I was taken aback. I had a good round if you don't count the first hole." When she finished, her five on the opening hole turned into a nine. Her hard-fought 72 - she was three under over the last 14 holes - turned into a 76.
"I tried to forget the first hole happened," Davis said. "All I can really do is have that give me motivation to do well tomorrow. I'm playing well. I have confidence I can do well tomorrow."
