Arthur Claims GolfRSA International Amateur Championship in Dramatic Playoff Victory

Posted : 03 February 2025

Astin Arthur secured his victory at the GolfRSA International Amateur Championship in a dramatic fashion, defeating Charl Barnard in a sudden-death play-off at Royal Johannesburg Golf Club. Arthur, who had shot a bogey-free 68 in the final round, held a one-shot lead heading into the 18th hole but faltered with a double-crossed shot.

Despite the pressure, Arthur maintained his composure, playing the 18th hole identically during the play-off, hitting the green, and lagging an eagle putt for a tap-in birdie that clinched the win.

Barnard, who had recorded a three-under-par 69, was left to rue his lone bogey on the par-five seventh hole, which proved costly. He had a chance to force a win but missed a challenging 15-footer for birdie after his chip went past the hole.

Arthur's ability to handle the pressure and make key putts under intense circumstances played a critical role in his success, leaving Barnard unable to match the performance on the final hole.

Jordan Burnand finished third, two strokes behind, with a five-under 67, while South African Golf Development Board Elite Squad player Johndre Ludick and Frenchman Octave Bailo shared fourth after rounds of 70 and 72, respectively. The tournament’s strong competition highlighted the caliber of players in the field, but Arthur's consistent focus and composure in critical moments made him stand out as the champion.

For Arthur, the victory was a significant achievement, marking one of his top career wins. Despite a challenging off-season, Arthur was determined to perform well and defend his ranking points. With his mindset and experience, coupled with his successful tournament performance, Arthur looks poised to continue his strong form as he heads to the African Amateur Championship at Leopard Creek, with aspirations for further success on the world stage.
