Armenia dominates at World Junior Weightlifting Championships, claiming Gold in Men's 67kg

Posted : 18 November 2023
Armenia secured the lead in the medals table at the Guadalajara Weightlifting Forum as Gor Sahakyan claimed victory in the men’s 67kg category. The win marked Armenia’s second victory at the World Junior Championships, with Sahakyan excelling after making 140kg in the snatch.

Despite Sahakyan's strong performance, American lifter Hampton Morris put up a fierce challenge, smashing his personal best in clean and jerk by 10kg and finishing only 2kg behind Sahakyan. Morris, lifting at 67kg internationally for the first time, expressed surprise at winning the gold medal and emphasized the importance of gaining confidence for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The event also witnessed a triumph for Svitlana Samuliak from Ukraine in the women's 59kg category, despite her training disruptions due to the war in her homeland. Samuliak, who trains in a small gym in the Carpathian mountains due to the conflict in Ukraine, made an impressive six-for-six lifts with a total of 214kg.

The Ukrainian weightlifter highlighted the symbolic significance of her performances, considering the challenging circumstances in her country. Meanwhile, American lifter Morris, with the guidance of his father and coach, decided to compete in Guadalajara at a heavier weight class to gain confidence for the Paris 2024 qualifiers in Qatar, where he aims to improve his snatch performance.

Armenia's Sahakyan, who has excelled in senior competitions, demonstrated consistency with his seventh time totaling 300kg, securing the gold in the men's 67kg category. The 19-year-old Morris, with a career-best total of 303kg, expressed satisfaction with his performance, emphasizing the unexpected nature of winning the gold medal.

Despite missing his last two clean and jerks, Sahakyan's experience and past achievements, including a European 67kg title, contributed to his success. The host nation, Mexico, also celebrated a medallist from the B Group, as Herseleid Carrazco secured snatch bronze in the women's 59kg category with a focus on making all six lifts.
