Argentina cruised to a comfortable victory over Chile, enhancing their prospects of reaching the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals and setting up a decisive showdown with Japan.
The Pumas dominated with an eight-try performance, ultimately winning 59-5 in Nantes, which propelled them to second place in Pool D, level on points with Japan. This result also marked the end of Chile's World Cup campaign, resulting in their fourth defeat.
Argentina asserted their dominance early, racing to a 24-0 lead by halftime and securing a bonus point try in the 45th minute. The victory also had the consequence of eliminating Samoa from contention in Pool D, leaving only Argentina and Japan to vie for a spot in the quarter-finals alongside group leaders England.
Notably, this match in Nantes marked the first-ever encounter between two South American teams at a Rugby World Cup. Argentina took the lead in the eighth minute when Nicolas Sanchez marked his 100th cap with a try in the corner. Juan Martin Gonzalez and Agustin Creevy added to the Pumas' lead with tries of their own.
Despite finishing the first half with 14 players due to Rodrigo Isgro's sin-binning for a high tackle, Argentina continued to dominate. Martin Bogado scored shortly after halftime to secure a bonus point, and Sanchez became Argentina's all-time leading points scorer at World Cups with a successful conversion.
Rodrigo Isgro, a World Cup debutant, added a fifth try for Argentina, while Gonzalez scored his second against a fatigued Chilean defense. Chile managed to score a deserved try late in the game when Tomas Dussaillant crossed the line following a powerful maul.
However, Argentina had the final say with late tries from Ignacio Ruiz and Santiago Carreras, sealing their emphatic victory. The win sets the stage for a decisive clash with Japan, where the winner will advance to the quarter-finals alongside England.
