Arbitration Lawsuit Allegedly Won by DP World Tour Against LIV Players
Posted : 16 April 2023
Regarding rumors that it has won its arbitration dispute against LIV players, the DP World Tour had "no comment."
The denial of a waiver to compete in LIV tournaments resulted in penalties and potential bans of £100,000 for 13 LIV players, including England's Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood.
According to The Times, the DP World Tour has prevailed and is entitled to punish participants in competing tournaments without authorization.
Sporting Resolutions, the arbitral tribunal, has not yet rendered a decision.
The three-person tribunal heard five days of arguments from the lawyers for the DP World Tour and the LIV players in private in February.
According to The Times, the decision will probably be made public on Thursday, the first day of the 2019 Masters.
LIV players may be barred from the Ryder Cup and the European tour if the lawsuit is decided in their favor.
A spokesperson for the DP World Tour said: "Out of respect for the confidentiality of the process conducted by Sport Resolutions, we will make no comment on any aspect of the arbitration until the decision is formally announced."
The situation started when players asked the DP World Tour for "conflicting event" releases so they could compete in the first LIV Golf tournament in London last June.
The pleas were turned down, resulting in a £100,000 fine and a Scottish Open suspension for those who played at Centurion Golf Club.
The sanctions were suspended while a meaningful appeal was being made since Poulter, Adrian Otaegui, and Justin Harding were the first to appeal the ruling. This let the players to participate in DP World Tour tournaments. In October, Otaegui went on to win the Andalucia Masters.
