The Nigerian Armed Forces team, on Thursday, claimed two gold medals in the men’s and women’s handball events at the ongoing 2024 Africa Military Games (AMGA) in Abuja.
The handball action got underway on Thursday at the indoor hall of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Package B, following Wednesday’s opening ceremony.

Only two teams – Nigeria and Ghana – participated in the event, with Ghana settling for silver in both categories.
The Nigerian Armed Forces teams began their campaign on a strong note, defeating their Ghanaian counterparts in the finals of both categories.
In the men’s category, Nigeria defeated Ghana 28-18 to claim the gold.
Meanwhile, Nigeria also won a silver medal in the men’s 87kg Greco-Roman Wrestling event.
This came after Tochukwu Okeke defeated Tunisia’s Sobri Mmosria 7-5 in his final match to secure a medal, with his wife also present at the venue to support him.
The category had four fighters registered and followed a round-robin format.
Overall, Okeke won two of his matches and lost one.
In the men’s football event, Cameroon defeated Nigeria 1-0 in extra time after a pulsating semi-final encounter that ended goalless at the end of regulation time.
In the other semi-final, Algeria defeated Equatorial Guinea 2-0 after a one-sided encounter.
The result means that Cameroon and Algeria will face off in Saturday’s final, while Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea will play the 3rd/4th place match.
A total of 20 games are being contested in the 2nd edition of AMGA 2024.
1,625 athletes from no fewer than 21 African countries are participating in the Games, which opened on Wednesday and are scheduled to end on Nov. 30.
