The FIVB Beach Volleyball U19 World Championships in Shangluo saw two American teams advance to the women’s quarterfinals on Saturday, joining teams from Australia, Belgium, France, Spain, Switzerland, and Thailand in the final eight. On the men’s side, two Polish pairs secured their spots in the quarterfinals, alongside teams from Finland, Germany, Hungary, Iran, Latvia, and Mexico.
In the women’s draw, USA's Sally Perez and Sarah Wood will face France's Saofe Duval and Romane Sobezalz in one of the quarterfinal matches. The American duo reached this stage by defeating Japan’s Mei Mori and Noa Utsugi with a 2-0 victory (21-17, 21-17). Perez and Wood expressed their excitement and relief, noting their strong communication and tactical preparation as key to their success.
France’s Duval and Sobezalz also advanced to the quarterfinals after a commanding 2-0 win (21-15, 21-14) over China’s Lei Yijing and Qi Siyu. The French team, who have played together in European championships, noted their progress during the match and expressed hope for a semifinal appearance.
In other quarterfinal matchups, Australia’s Jasmine Rayner and Cameron Zajer will compete against Thailand’s Varagkhana Sogalee and Somruedee Koedkaew. Both teams had to navigate through challenging elimination rounds on Friday. Belgium’s Ines Piret and Annelore Bex, as well as Switzerland’s Muriel Bossart and Livia Stolz, will face USA’s Myriah Massey and Lily Davis, and Spain’s Sofía Izuzquiza and Marta Carro, respectively, in their quest to secure a semifinal spot.
On the men’s side, Poland is the only country with two teams in the quarterfinals. Szymon Pietraszek and Jakub Krzeminski, along with Marcel Wanat and Tomasz Warych, advanced through a mix of victories. Wanat and Warych won both their Friday matches in straight sets, while Pietraszek and Krzeminski triumphed in a tie-breaker.
In the upcoming quarterfinals, Pietraszek and Krzeminski will face Finland’s Veeti Viljamaa and Konsta Viljamaa, while Wanat and Warych will compete against Iran’s AmirAli GhalehNovi and Habib AkbarzadehKashani. Other matches include Mexico’s Ines Antonio Vargas Lares and Carlos Andres Ayala Herrera against Hungary’s Bence Tari and Akos Veress, and Latvia’s Matīss Salkovskis and Karlis Jaundzeikars against Germany’s Julian Hikel and Ole Sackermann.
