Altin van der Merwe is poised to make the most of the Fortress Invitational this week on the Sunshine Tour, understanding its potential to transform a rookie season into a landmark one. Currently sitting third in the Fortress Rookie of the Year standings, the 27-year-old has a notable example in Robin Williams, who claimed this title last year during his rookie season and has since earned a DP World Tour card.
Van der Merwe enters the first round at Glendower Golf Club on Thursday, buoyed by two top-10 finishes in his last five events, which bolster his confidence as he aims to leave his mark.
What sets van der Merwe apart is the unique perspective he brings to his first season on Tour, having turned professional later than most. Reflecting on his life experiences, he recognizes that navigating ups and downs has given him a deeper understanding of the challenges in golf.
"I’ve had a few ups and a lot of downs in my life," he shares. "You learn to accept it a lot easier. Accepting is the biggest part of this game. If you hit a bad shot, there’s nothing you can do about it but move on." This maturity could be crucial as he tackles the pressures of competitive golf.
Van der Merwe’s journey began at the age of 19 when he first attempted the Sunshine Tour Qualifying School, narrowly missing the cut by a single stroke. This setback proved pivotal, as he recalls the emotional toll it took. "I was pretty broken after Q School," he reflects, describing a grueling 10-hour drive home in silence.
The disappointment lingered for about two years, impacting his performance on the course. However, he used that time wisely, becoming one of South Africa's top amateurs and accumulating significant accolades while also completing his studies and gaining life experience working as a waiter.
In April of this year, van der Merwe returned to the Qualifying School and emerged victorious, marking a significant milestone in his career. This season, he has come tantalizingly close to securing a win on the Sunshine Tour twice. "I want to perform out here," he admits, acknowledging the pressure he places on himself while also noting that his wife encourages him to relax.
As he competes in the Fortress Invitational, he is determined to continue putting himself in contention for victories. Additionally, the event will witness Tyran Snyders making his professional debut as a product of the Global Amateur Pathway, further highlighting the Sunshine Tour's commitment to nurturing emerging talent.
