Ally Ewing leads one-shot at 2023 AIG Women's Open in British weather conditions

Ally Ewing might be far from her home in Mississippi, but as the current frontrunner at the 2023 AIG Women’s Open, she feels right at ease with the British conditions.
After her ninth-place finish in the recent Scottish Open, the 30-year-old continued her strong performance on the sunny opening day at Walton Heath. She carded an impressive four-under round of 68, taking a one-shot lead over a group of five players.
While most of her competitors were morning starters, Ewing's afternoon surge showcased the advantage of her preparation and secured her a leadership position as she heads into her second round on Friday at 8.47am.
Ewing noted, “Even though we're a bit inland here in Surrey, European golf has its uniqueness. You need to employ more creativity, imagination, and different shot selections. Challenging myself at Dundonald was beneficial and made me feel well-prepared.”
She continued, “I played solid golf, finishing in the top 10 last week. So, entering this major, that's a positive feeling. I dealt with quite a bit of wind at the Scottish Open. Tough weather conditions on Thursday were expected. Wind is part and parcel when you come to Europe. So, it's not shocking. Regardless of the conditions, finishing at four-under, I'm quite content.”
Ewing has demonstrated consistent performance at the AIG Women’s Open, making the cut in five of her previous six appearances. Although her best result was a tied 16th place during her debut at Kingsbarns in 2017, her first-round performance in the current tournament, featuring five birdies and an eagle on the 16th hole, suggests a possible improvement. However, Ewing remains grounded.
She stated, “Starting with a strong first round is great, but in major championship golf, you can't afford to lose focus. After some nourishment and a good night's sleep, I'll be back for the next day's challenge.”
Ewing emphasized her intention to maintain patience while executing her game plan. “I set a goal to finish in the top 30 or better in the first round. While it might be a conservative approach, it provides a chance. That's the mindset I had entering a major.”
She concluded, “I'm not aiming solely for the top 30, but being in the lead right now is definitely satisfying.”
