Nigeria's Abdulqudus Olawale Aliu ends competition on 23rd position at World Youth Scrabble Championship

Posted : 12 September 2024

Abdulqudus Olawale Aliu, one of Team Nigeria's representatives at the World Youth Scrabble Championship in Sri Lanka, ended the competition in 23rd place.

Aliu, a multiple National Youth Games gold medalist, finished 23rd after winning 14 games and losing 10, similar to Sufyan Boluwatife Olokojo, but with a higher cumulative score than Olokojo.

Among the 136 players from 22 countries, Sufyan Boluwatife Olokojo finished in 28th place.

Top Scrabble stakeholders believe that jet lag and a hectic travel schedule contributed to the games the duo lost at the championship.

Sufyan Boluwatife Olokojo stated that the championship provided valuable learning experiences about the game, and he believes that by 2025, they will contend for a podium finish.

Meanwhile, members of Team Nigeria who recently competed at the World Youth Scrabble Championship in Sri Lanka have praised the Kwara State Government for covering their expenses for this prestigious event.

Team captain Abdulqudus Olawale Aliu expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent Nigeria and the support provided by the Kwara State Government.

“I know the government has many projects and limited funds, but they still supported our dream of representing Nigeria. We are truly grateful and hope to continue making Kwara State and Nigeria proud,” Aliu said.

“We want to thank our Governor for his support. We pray Allah continues to bless him, and we promise to perform better in future international championships,” said Aliu, who won double gold at the last National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State.

In a related development, the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) has described Team Nigeria's performance at the World Youth Scrabble Championship as impressive and commendable.

Engineer Toke Aka, President of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation, noted that these young players represent the future of the game, both in Nigeria and globally.

“I can assure you that these young boys and girls can compete with any Masters category player without fear. Some of the players you saw at the World Youth Championship have previously beaten some of us,” Aka explained.

The NSF President also praised the Kwara State Government for its support despite the country's challenging economic conditions.

It is important to note that the Kwara State Government has been investing in the development of its sports sector over the past five years.
