Akshay Bhatia takes commanding lead with stellar 63 at PGA Texas Open

Posted : 05 April 2024

Akshay Bhatia surged into the lead at the PGA Texas Open's opening round, carding a sensational nine-under par 63 at TPC San Antonio.

The 22-year-old American's flawless performance included five birdies in the last seven holes, matching his career-low round on the PGA Tour and marking his best score in the first 18 holes at any tour event.

Reflecting on his stellar play, Bhatia credited his familiarity with the course, having played at TPC San Antonio for the third time, which contributed to his solid outing.

Justin Lower and Brendon Todd trailed Bhatia by three strokes, sharing the second spot on the leaderboard with a score of 66 each.

Meanwhile, a group of American golfers, including Max Homa, Denny McCarthy, Austin Eckroat, and Tyson Alexander, occupied the fourth position with a score of 68. Notably, world No. 2 Rory McIlroy, gearing up for the Masters, commenced his campaign with a solid round of 69.

Bhatia's impressive performance comes on the heels of a series of consistent outings this season, marked by five top-17 finishes and a breakthrough victory at the Barracuda Championship last July.

The young golfer attributes his recent success to his collaboration with psychologist Ryan, emphasizing the importance of mental preparation and goal-setting.

As Bhatia heads into the subsequent rounds, he remains focused on executing his game plan and capitalizing on his momentum, aiming to maintain his lead in the tournament.
