Canada’s Adam Svensson shot an impressive 11-under-par 60 to take the lead during the first round of the inaugural Black Desert Championship on Thursday in Ivins, Utah. Starting his round on the back nine at Black Desert Resort, Svensson made an eagle at the par-5 seventh hole with a remarkable 31.5-foot putt, propelling him to 10 under par and putting him in contention for a potential 59.
After making par on the eighth hole, he approached the ninth, reaching a greenside bunker in two strokes. Although his recovery shot just missed an eagle by four feet, he tapped in for a birdie, concluding his round with a score of 60.
Svensson currently holds a two-stroke advantage over Matt McCarty and Sweden's Henrik Norlander. The Canadian golfer kicked off his round with five consecutive birdies from holes 15 through 1, nearly achieving a hole-in-one at the par-3 15th, missing by just 11 inches. He demonstrated his skill at the par-3 17th, where he holed out from a bunker for another birdie.
At 30 years old, Svensson entered the week ranked No. 76 in the FedEx Cup Fall standings. If he can maintain a position within the 51-60 range by the end of the fall, he will qualify for the first two signature events of 2025, namely the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Genesis Invitational. His strong performance in this tournament is crucial for achieving that goal.
Norlander, aged 37, showcased a flawless round, hitting all 14 fairways and 18 greens in regulation while recording nine birdies without any bogeys. McCarty, 26, playing in just his second PGA Tour event after moving up from the Korn Ferry Tour, eagled the par-4 fifth hole with a 36-foot putt and added seven birdies to his score.
Kevin Streelman, who had the honor of hitting the inaugural tee shot at this new PGA Tour venue—the first in Utah since 1963—birdied four of his last five holes to finish the day with a 7-under 64, putting him in fourth place as play concluded for the evening. As darkness fell, more than two dozen players had yet to finish their rounds.
