Aaron Rai claimed his first PGA Tour victory at the rain-affected Wyndham Championship after overcoming a dramatic final round in Greensboro, North Carolina. The 29-year-old Englishman secured the win with a birdie putt from just inside seven feet on the last hole, finishing the tournament with a bogey-free six-under par 64. Rai's total of 18-under 262 for 72 holes was enough to edge out American Max Greyserman by two strokes.
Rai's victory came after Greyserman, who had led by four strokes with five holes remaining, faltered in a dramatic turn of events. Greyserman’s back nine was marked by a series of errors, including a quadruple bogey on the 14th hole, which allowed Rai to close the gap. Despite a brief resurgence with a birdie on the par-5 15th, Greyserman’s missteps on the 16th hole, where he missed two putts from inside four feet, handed the lead to Rai.
Ryo Hisatsune of Japan and American J.J. Spaun finished tied for third at 265, with US amateur Luke Clanton a stroke behind them. Clanton, who has had an impressive year, finished in the top 10 for the third time this season, a feat not achieved by an amateur since Jack Nicklaus in 1961. Clanton played 39 holes on Sunday and will continue his competitive run in the US Amateur starting Monday.
The Wyndham Championship served as the final regular-season event before the PGA playoffs, which begin next week. French golfer Victor Perez secured the 70th and final spot in the playoffs with his performance on Sunday. Meanwhile, Matt Kuchar, who did not complete his round due to darkness, will miss the playoffs for the first time since their inception in 2007.
