9-year-old, Saviour Onazi, 11 others, make Team Nigeria for World Youth Scrabble Championship

The Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) has named 12 players, including 9-year-old Saviour Onazi, to represent the country at the forthcoming World Youth Scrabble Championship in Sri Lanka.


The team of eight boys and four girls, to be captained by Joy Nwabuzor, was announced by the National Youth Team handler, Samuel Eromosele.


Team captain Joy Nwabuzor won gold for Edo State during the 7th National Youth Games (NYG) held in Asaba, Delta State.


Another standout member of Team Nigeria Scrabble heading to the World Youth Scrabble Championship is Abdulqudus Aliu, who led Kwara State to sweep the top honors at the Games.


The winner of the African Youth Scrabble Championship WASC U-15, Prestige Archibong, along with Ese Ejenakevbe, Sufyan Boluwatife (a 9-year-old scrabble prodigy), Saviour Onazi, and Clinton Imode are other talented players heading to Sri Lanka to represent Nigeria.


Saviour Onazi is the youngest member of the team at 9 years old, while 17-year-old Sufyan Boluwatife is the oldest player in Team Nigeria Scrabble heading to the World Championship.


Joy Nwabuzor, Hauwa Abdullahi, Sophia Ekeruche, and Michelle Ikekeregor are the girls who will defend Nigeria’s colors during the World Championship.


Members of the Nigeria Team to the World Youth Scrabble Championship are:


Boys:

- Sufyan Boluwatife
- Demilade Lawrence
- Ese Ejenakevbe
- Pereowei Edidie
- Saviour Onazi


Girls:
- Joy Nwabuzor
- Hauwa Abdullahi
- Sophia Ekeruche
- Michelle Ikekeregor


The coach of the team, Samuel Eromosele, believes they are capable of finishing at the top of the medal table in Sri Lanka come September.


"I started working with this group in October 2022 when I was tasked with preparing the National Youth Team for the 2023 African Youth Scrabble Championship and the AYSC event in Lagos," said Eromosele.


AYSC U-15 results:
- Prestige Archibong: 1st
- Abdulqudus Aliu: 2nd
- Clinton Imode: 3rd
- Ese Ejenakevbe: 4th
- Sufyan Boluwatife: 5th
- Joy Nwabuzor: 6th


The team will hold their training camp in either Lagos or Abuja before heading to Sri Lanka.


The World Youth Scrabble Championship (formerly known as the WESPA Youth Cup) has been held annually since 2006. This year, Sri Lanka has been chosen to host the tournament.
