8th NYG: Team Bayelsa dominates chess events

Posted : 18 September 2024

Team Bayelsa delivered a brilliant performance in chess at the ongoing National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, by outshining 28 other states in the country.

The Bayelsa chess team showed no mercy to their opponents, amassing a total of 5 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze medal—the highest number won by any sport, closely followed by swimming, which secured four gold, silver, and a bronze medal.

The talented athletes won gold in the boys' blitz event thanks to Goodness Ekunke, and Treasure Ebiakpo also claimed gold in the girls' blitz event. Treasure Ebiakpo settled for silver in the girls' individual event.

Bayefa Miebi earned gold in the girls' individual event, and Goodness Ekunke clinched gold in the boys' individual event. The girls secured gold, while the boys settled for bronze. Bayefa Oyeinkeperemo also won a bronze medal, increasing the team's medal tally.

In athletics, Bayelsa won silver in the 4x100 meters boys' relay. Perfect Faye claimed bronze in the 200 meters boys' race. Bayelsa now holds two silver medals and one bronze in athletics.

In darts, which had previously won gold in the 501 doubles, the team could only manage silver as they lost to the host team, Delta, in the mixed doubles. The duo of Andrew Blessing and Favour Ketekete represented Bayelsa in this event.

As of the time of this report, Team Bayelsa has won fourteen gold, seventeen silver, and twenty bronze medals. Wrestling is set to begin on Wednesday (today) as the National Youth Games enters its final stretch.
