Gideon Magaji cannot hide his joy at seeing his team win the coveted gold medal in the handball event as Delta State defeated Team Lagos in the boys' final of the just-concluded Asaba 2024 National Youth Games.
Gideon, who was outstanding in the fiercely contested final between Delta State and Lagos State, was over the moon and could not contain his happiness after winning the gold medal by defeating their rivals from Lagos.
Magaji expressed that winning the gold medal has brought him unspeakable joy. "I am very happy to have won this medal. I wear my medal to sleep; I can’t take it off, and wherever I go, I have to keep it around my neck," said the elated Gideon Magaji.
He spoke further about his experience at the games and how Team Delta navigated their way to the final to secure the gold.
"Niger State was our toughest opponent. We defeated Niger State in the semi-final, and it was a very tough game before beating Lagos in the final. We are really happy to have beaten Lagos; they are our rivals, and we were determined to win," Gideon said.
Regarding his future in the sport, the teenage handball player, whose ultimate ambition is to represent the Nigerian national handball team, stated that he plans to train harder so that he can defend the title won in Asaba during the 2025 edition.
"I want to go back and train harder to ensure we win the gold medal next year, God willing," Gideon concluded.
