8th NYG: Anambra wins gold in Scrabble, triple jump

Team Anambra has won gold in the female Scrabble singles and triple jump events at the ongoing 8th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta.


The state now has a total of five gold, five silver, and six bronze medals, bringing their total medal count to 16.


Victoria Chukwuemeka claimed gold in the female Scrabble singles, while Adaeze Eze secured gold in the female long jump event.

 


Other gold medalists include Chibuikem Oranye (Taekwondo individual Poomsae - Male), Rosemary Nwankwo (100m Female), and Chioma Edeh (800m Female).


Team Anambra’s male cricket team won silver on day one, while Chibuikem Oranye and Favour Nwakaeze earned silver in the Taekwondo Team Poomsae event. Chizitere Oguegbe also placed second in the 100m swimming backstroke female, winning silver.


Additional silver winners include Divine Egede in the -35kg Kyorugi Female Taekwondo event, and the trio of Onyinye Nnemkwo, Chimamanda Chukwuemeka, and Catherine Ubammayie won silver in the female team Scrabble event.


Anambra also claimed bronze in the Table Tennis mixed doubles, thanks to Chisom Nnamani and Chukwugoziem Ezeofor, while Goodluck Njoku won bronze in the Karate -50kg male event.


Favour Nwakaeze won bronze again in Taekwondo Female Individual Poomsae and -47kg Kyorugi Female, while Excel Ocheke earned bronze in the Gymnastics Vault - Male event, and Favour Obiefuna claimed bronze in the female high jump.


In response, Patrick-Estate Onyedum, Chairman of the Anambra Sports Development Commission, expressed his satisfaction that the state featured a team that adhered to the age limit. Onyedum commended the youthful athletes, noting that about 99 percent of the team members passed the screening.


He called for greater transparency from officials, especially in technical events, while expressing confidence that more medals would come to the state.


Meanwhile, Mrs. Nonye Soludo, wife of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, urged the team to continue demonstrating resilience in every task, reflecting the Anambra spirit of perseverance.


She added that the team was determined not only to surpass their previous performance but also to finish as one of the most successful teams in the Games.


The governor’s wife promised a grand reception for the team when they return to Awka after the Games.
