During the opening round of the 3M Open, players showcased impressive performances with low scores, chip-ins, and hole-outs. Defending champion Tony Finau had a strong start, going 5 under through his first four holes.
However, he faced challenges later in the round, finishing even par. Lee Hodges emerged as the leader with a remarkable 63, recording eight birdies. Close behind were former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama, Brandt Snedeker, Tyler Duncan, and Kevin Streelman, all at 7 under.
Also in contention at 6 under were Justin Suh, Emiliano Grillo, and Nick Hardy, who made a unique birdie on the 18th hole. Several players, including Tony Finau, Billy Horschel, Adam Svensson, and Vincent Norrman, were at 5 under.
The morning wave experienced better conditions, with Lee Hodges taking advantage of favorable weather. However, as the wind picked up in the afternoon, scores rose for the later wave. Despite the challenging conditions, players who shot 3 or 4 under in the afternoon are still within striking distance, needing just one solid round to contend for the weekend.
