23-year-old Ludvig Aberg chosen as wildcard for European Ryder Cup team
Posted : 04 September 2023
Ludvig Aberg, a newly turned professional golfer, has been named as one of Captain Luke Donald's six wildcard picks for the European Ryder Cup team. Aberg, aged 23, who recently transitioned to the professional ranks in June, secured victory at the European Masters in Switzerland over the weekend.
Captain Donald expressed his confidence in Aberg, describing him as a potential generational talent. Aberg's inclusion in the Ryder Cup team marks the quickest transition from the amateur ranks to the tournament in its history.
The other five wildcard picks for the 12-man European team include Tommy Fleetwood, Sepp Straka, Justin Rose, Shane Lowry, and Nicolai Hojgaard. These players will join the six automatic qualifiers: Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Tyrrell Hatton, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Robert MacIntyre. The Ryder Cup is set to take place at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club from September 29th to October 1st.
Captain Donald expressed his belief in Aberg's potential, highlighting his remarkable abilities and statistics. Aberg's performance in college golf was outstanding, drawing comparisons to the likes of Viktor Hovland and Jon Rahm. Despite his recent transition to the professional circuit, Aberg has already demonstrated exceptional skills, particularly in driving.
Notably, Poland's Adrian Meronk, despite winning the Italian Open on the Ryder Cup course in May and holding a high ranking in the DP World Tour, was not selected for the team.
