2025 Giro d'Italia to Begin in Albania and End in Rome

Posted : 15 January 2025

The 2025 Giro d'Italia will conclude in Rome for the third consecutive year, with the final stage taking place on June 1. Riders will participate in a flat procession stage, completing eight laps around the iconic Roman ruins of the Eternal City.

However, the real challenges will have already been faced by that point, with the peloton tackling a tough 21-stage route across Italy and Albania, including a particularly demanding final week through the northern mountain ranges.

The 2025 Giro will be more challenging than the previous year, with a total of 52,200 meters of climbing, an increase of over 10,000 meters compared to last year. The race, which spans 3,413 kilometers, will test even the most seasoned cyclists as they push through tough terrain and high-altitude climbs in their bid for the coveted pink jersey.

Last year's winner, Tadej Pogacar, claimed the title in dominant fashion, but this year's competition will be fierce, with grueling climbs ahead for those vying for the top spot.

The Giro will kick off on May 9 in the coastal city of Durres, Albania, marking the first time the race will begin in the country. The opening stage will see riders covering 164 kilometers over three climbs to reach the capital city of Tirana, where the second stage will feature a 13.7km individual time trial.

After departing Albania, the race will move through mainland Italy, with a challenging third stage starting and finishing in Vlore, before riders make their way up to Lecce in the deep south.

Riders will venture beyond Italy's borders once again in Stage 14, traveling from Treviso to Nova Gorica in Slovenia, Pogacar's homeland. The final stages of the race will see the riders face extra climbing, including a tough Stage 19 with three category one climbs in the 166 kilometers between Biella and Champoluc.

The penultimate stage will feature the grueling Colle delle Finistre, known for its 8km of gravel roads, before the peloton reaches Sestiere. Meanwhile, the Giro d'Italia Women’s race, set to run from July 6-13, will be contested over eight stages, culminating at the Formula One circuit in Imola.
