Team Akwa Ibom has won its first medals at the ongoing eighth National Youth Games in Asaba, the Delta capital.
Destiny Bassey Okon, a student of Aka Community Secondary School in Uyo, won two silver medals in the 49kg weightlifting category, bringing the state its first medals at the under-15 multi-sports championship.
The teenager, who narrowly missed out on a gold medal, won his awards in the 63kg jerk and 53kg snatch events in the indoor sports hall of Stephen Keshi Stadium, in front of an enthusiastic crowd that included members of the Akwa Ibom community in Delta State.
Team Akwa Ibom will also compete in the 55kg category, with the weigh-in scheduled for eight o'clock tomorrow morning.
Meanwhile, Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Sports, Sir Monday Uko, has pledged a generous reward for state athletes who win gold medals.
The state's sports boss said the reward is intended to motivate members of Team Akwa Ibom to work hard and strive to make the state proud.
