The 2024 Hockey National Super League has kicked off at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja with 23 teams in attendance.
The competition features 13 male teams and 10 female teams from across various states in Nigeria.
Speaking on the sidelines of the annual league competition, the Secretary of the Nigeria Hockey Federation (HFN), Chinedu Osuoha, assured that the 2024 Hockey National Super League will be one of the best ever.
Osuoha, at the Murtala Square Hockey pitch in Kaduna, said that the league now includes 13 male teams and 10 female teams.
He disclosed that the winners (both male and female) will represent Nigeria in the Africa Club Championship 2024 in December, though the host city has not yet been determined.
Regarding the decision to hold the competition in Kaduna, he said, "We have been organizing the competition in Abuja. We brought it to Kaduna for three reasons. First, the President of the Hockey Federation, Engineer Simon Ikom, is from Kaduna, so we want to honor him. Second, the Police biannual competition will be held in Kaduna, so we want to use it as a test. Third, it's becoming monotonous always hosting it in Abuja."
"Our doors are open to any sponsors, as the government alone can no longer fund everything. We are looking for individuals and corporate bodies to partner with us," said Osuoha.
Regarding the national team, he mentioned that the tournament will help scout for new talents.
"At the moment, our female national team is second in Africa, while the male team is fourth in Africa and fifteenth in the world. We aim to perform well at next year's African Championship to secure a Commonwealth ticket," he added.
The National Hockey Super League runs from July 20 to 27.
