2024 African Sitting Volleyball Championship: Kenya wallops Nigeria

Posted : 30 January 2024

Team Kenya on Monday expressed their determination to be the sole ticket available for the African teams at the Paralympics as they walloped Nigeria 3-0 in the first match. The female team from Kenya started the qualifying match for the 2024 Paralympics in Paris like a wildfire, as they gave no chance to their Nigerian counterparts in spite of playing in front of many cheering spectators at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

The Kenyan female team defeated Nigeria by 3-0 (25-15, 25-6, and 21-15). The Kenyan team, in an interview on the sidelines of the win, said they were not in Nigeria as onlookers. Recall that the 2024 African Sitting Volleyball Championships are being hosted by Nigeria at the Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere.

The competition, which serves as the African Para Volleyball qualifiers for the 2024 Paralympic Games, has eight countries in attendance to battle for the Paris Paralympic Games following the last-minute withdrawal of Zimbabwe. The competition will be held between Monday, Jan. 29, and Saturday, Feb. 10.

Nicolas Lagat, the head of delegation for Team Kenya, said his team was in Nigeria to pick up the two tickets in the male and female categories.

''For me, actions speak better than words, but I can simply say that we are fully ready for Nigeria and other countries. ''We will pick the tickets in the male and female categories; if we didn't emerge first, then we should be in second place.

“Team Kenya is strong enough to pick this ticket, however our actions on the court will speak louder'' he said.

The captain of the Kenya female team, Jackline, said that they were more experienced in sitting volleyball than other countries.

''We are more prepared for the African Sitting Volleyball Championship; we have been training for a long time, and now is the time for us to display our skills.

''Personally, I have been dreaming of attending the Paralympics since about six years ago, so it's time for me to go. There are two slots available for the female category among the three participants.

“We are certain to pick one ticket from the tickets'' she said.

The assistant captain, Team Kenya Female Sylvia Olero, said the team won't be intimidated by any country.

''We are here to play; we desire to go to the Paralympics because we have what it takes.

''I started playing sitting volleyball in 2016 locally, and this is my first international exposure; as a team, this slot is ours to keep,'' she said.
