2023 European Youth Rapid & Blitz Chess Championship kicks off in Slovenia with thrilling competition

The 2023 European Youth Rapid & Blitz Chess Championship is set to commence on September 28th in Terme Catez, Slovenia. This prestigious event will bring together nearly 500 players representing 27 European federations, all vying for the coveted European champion title.
The championship will be split into two segments, with the European Youth Rapid Chess Championship taking place on September 28th and 29th, featuring six age categories: U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, and U18, with separate sections for open and girls.
The tournament format will consist of 9 rounds, utilizing the Swiss system, and each player will have a time control of 15 minutes with a 10-second increment.
Following the rapid chess competition, the European Youth Blitz Chess Championship 2023 will be held on September 30th, also featuring six age categories and separate open and girls sections. This segment will consist of 9 double rounds, again using the Swiss system, and each player will have a time control of 3 minutes with a 2-second increment.
Hotel Terme Catez will be the venue for the 22nd European Youth Rapid & Blitz Chess Championship, serving as the official hotel for the tournament.
In addition to the individual competitions, the 21st European Youth Team Rapid Chess Championship is scheduled for Saturday, September 30th. This event will encompass three age categories: U10, U14, and U18, with separate open and girls sections.
Teams will comprise 4 players from the same federation for the Open sections and 2 players from the same federation for the girls' sections, with no reserve players allowed. The tournament will consist of 7 rounds, employing the Swiss system, and each player will have a time control of 10 minutes with a 5-second increment.
The Slovenian Chess Federation is the organizer of this event, conducted under the auspices of the European Chess Union. ESET, a global digital security company, is a sponsor of the ECU and the tournament.
They will provide prizes and gifts, including 144 ESET Internet Security Licenses with a 1-year duration and branded merchandise with ESET Slovenia branding, such as sunglasses and mouse pads, to the winners of the European Championship in Slovenia. These 144 software licenses will be awarded to the six winners in each age group for both the Rapid and Blitz Championships.
