The ongoing 13th African Games has suffered a major setback due to a national network breakdown. This has rendered data services inaccessible, significantly slowing down operations at the games.
At the Media Center in the University of Ghana, media practitioners experienced slow network services yesterday. Some journalists were unable to send reports to their editors on time, while others faced delays.
Local journalists in Ghana could access their offices if needed. However, international journalists were most affected. Some even switched network service providers in an attempt to maintain connectivity.
The National Communication Authority (NCA) in Ghana has issued an official statement acknowledging a national issue. Disruptions affecting multiple undersea cables in Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire are responsible for limited international traffic. There are also reported disruptions in Portugal.
The NCA apologized to consumers of mobile and fixed data services in the statement. They assured customers that Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) are working around the clock to restore full service as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, officials and journalists at the African Games also encountered disruptions while trying to use Bolt and Yango services. Consistent network failures prevented these services from operating effectively.
Financial transactions in Accra were also impacted. Both mobile money transactions and point-of-sale (POS) services were affected. As a result, only individuals with cash could conduct transactions in Ghana.
The glitches also impacted the Local Organizing Committee's (LOC) ability to update the medal tables on the official African Games website. Some results achieved at the time of this report were yet to be reflected online.
Activities of the African Games continue today. Athletes, media practitioners, and officials remain hopeful that normalcy will be restored soon, allowing the African Games to proceed smoothly as planned by the LOC.
