Saudi Arabian driver Yazeed al-Rajhi claimed victory in the fourth stage of the Dakar Rally on Wednesday, narrowing the gap in the overall standings after South Africa's Henk Lategan. The stage, spanning 415 kilometers between Al Henakiyah and Al Ula in Saudi Arabia, saw al-Rajhi finish in four hours, 26 minutes, and 40 seconds, 4 minutes and 51 seconds ahead of Lategan, and moved into second place overall, 6 minutes and 54 seconds behind the leader.
Nasser al-Attiyah, a five-time Dakar winner, faced significant setbacks during the stage, suffering a puncture and a broken suspension arm.
Al-Attiyah received assistance from teammate Cristina Gutierrez, who provided the necessary part from her car. Despite the repairs, he acknowledged that he would have to adapt his strategy moving forward and vowed to attack in the remaining stages.
In the motorcycle category, Tosha Schareina of Spain made a strategic decision to relinquish the lead near the finish, prioritizing the protection of his bike and tires.
This allowed Australian Daniel Sanders, who had struggled with navigation earlier in the stage, to secure his fourth victory in six days of racing. Sanders finished 15 seconds ahead of Schareina, with Chile's Jose Ignacio Cornejo Florimo taking third, 7 minutes and 49 seconds behind Sanders.
Schareina, leading by 2 minutes and 30 seconds with just 32 kilometers remaining, opted to slow down to preserve his bike for the marathon stage ahead. Sanders, who had previously won the prologue and three of the other four stages, now leads Schareina by 13 minutes and 26 seconds in the overall standings.
The next stage on Thursday is a 428-kilometer special from Al Ula to Hail, with competitors looking forward to a rest day on Friday.
