With a commanding victory in the Italian Grand Prix, Francesco Bagnaia extends his championship lead

Posted : 11 June 2023
Francesco Bagnaia continued to dominate the MotoGP scene in Italy as he secured a commanding victory at the Italian Grand Prix. Riding for Ducati, the defending world champion not only followed up his win in the sprint race on Saturday but also extended his lead in the championship standings.

The race at Mugello was a special one for Bagnaia, his second consecutive triumph at the Italian circuit. Starting from pole position, he momentarily lost the lead to Jack Miller at Turn 1 but swiftly regained control just a few corners later. From that point onward, he remained unchallenged and crossed the finish line as the clear winner.

Pramac Racing had a fantastic day as well, achieving a double podium finish. Jorge Martin secured second place, while Johann Zarco took the third spot on the podium.

However, not all riders had a smooth race. Marc Marquez, who started in second position, crashed out from fourth place on Lap 6, intensifying the battle for the final podium position. Alex Marquez, Marc's brother, managed to overtake Luca Marini on Lap 11 and secure third place. Unfortunately, his race ended prematurely when he crashed three laps later while defending his position.

This set the stage for a thrilling nine-lap fight between Zarco and Marini for the last spot on the podium. Ultimately, Zarco emerged victorious after an exciting battle.

Bagnaia's win not only solidified his position as the championship leader but also extended his lead to 21 points over his closest competitor, Marco Bezzecchi, who finished the race in eighth place.
