Williams Racing has decided to replace Logan Sargeant with Franco Colapinto for the remainder of the Formula 1 season. Sargeant, the only American driver in the series, has struggled this season, currently sitting 20th out of 21 drivers in the standings with no top-10 finishes across 14 races. His best result was an 11th-place finish at the British Grand Prix on July 7.
Team principal James Vowles acknowledged the difficult decision, emphasizing that the move aims to enhance Williams' chances of scoring points for the rest of the season. Vowles expressed gratitude for Sargeant's efforts and positive attitude during his tenure with the team, which included 36 races over the past two seasons.
Sargeant notably became the first American driver to score a point in F1 since Michael Andretti at the 2023 US Grand Prix. Despite this achievement, Williams is currently positioned ninth out of ten teams in the constructors' standings. Vowles expressed confidence in Colapinto's speed and potential, looking forward to his impact in Formula 1.
Colapinto, a 21-year-old Argentine, will partner with Alex Albon for the final nine races of the 2024 season, beginning with the Italian Grand Prix. He expressed excitement about his debut with Williams and is prepared for the steep learning curve, eager to contribute to the team's efforts to return to the forefront of the sport.
