William Byron secured his first NASCAR Cup Series road-course victory in the Go Bowling at The Glen at Watkins Glen International. Byron's dominant win marked his career-best fifth victory of the season, making him the leader in the Cup Series for the season. He held off Denny Hamlin by a significant 2.632 seconds to claim the win. Byron led for 66 of the 90 laps, consistently extending his lead in the final 10-lap stretch to the finish line.
Byron credited his race team and expressed gratitude for the win, acknowledging the hard work that led to this victory. He mentioned his preparation using iRacing and a new simulator at home to enhance his performance. The victory holds special significance as it comes at a critical time in the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs preparation.
The second-place finish by Denny Hamlin keeps the regular-season championship in contention, as he trails Martin Truex Jr. by 39 points heading into the regular-season finale at Daytona International Speedway.
Christopher Bell finished third, followed by AJ Allmendinger and Ty Gibbs in the top five. Martin Truex Jr., Chris Buescher, Tyler Reddick, Ryan Blaney, and Joey Logano rounded out the top ten.
Brad Keselowski and Kevin Harvick secured their spots in the 2023 playoffs based on points, leaving only one position to be decided in the regular-season finale at Daytona. Bubba Wallace solidified his 16th place in the points standings, boosting his chances for an automatic transfer to the playoffs. Despite road-course racing not being his strength, Wallace executed a consistent performance that earned him valuable points.
Chase Elliott, however, encountered difficulties as he ran out of fuel and finished 32nd, dropping to 21st in the standings. He faces the challenge of needing a win at the upcoming Daytona race to secure a spot in the playoffs.
Daniel Suárez also faced issues with an off-course excursion and finished 22nd, placing him 43 points out of the top 16 and in need of a victory to advance.
With the regular-season finale at Daytona approaching, the NASCAR Cup Series anticipates an exciting conclusion to set the 2023 playoff field. The Coke Zero Sugar 400 is set to determine the 16-driver playoff lineup.
