Verstappen Unfazed by Red Bull Struggles Amid Exit Rumours

Posted : 17 April 2025

Max Verstappen has expressed calm over his future in Formula 1, despite Red Bull's unsteady start to the 2025 season. After finishing sixth at the Bahrain Grand Prix, team adviser Helmut Marko voiced concern about the Dutchman's potential departure. Verstappen, currently chasing a fifth consecutive world title, sits third in the standings, trailing championship leader Lando Norris by eight points as the grid heads into round five in Saudi Arabia.

Speaking ahead of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Verstappen dismissed speculation around his contract, saying his focus remains firmly on improving the car alongside his team. Although contracted with Red Bull until 2028, reports suggest a performance clause could allow him to exit early. Rumors have linked him with moves to either Mercedes or Aston Martin in 2026 when new technical rules take effect, but no formal negotiations appear imminent.

Fernando Alonso was asked whether he would welcome Verstappen as a team-mate at Aston Martin and responded affirmatively, though he admitted it was highly unlikely. Verstappen previously held talks with Mercedes, but team principal Toto Wolff recently indicated that pursuing the Red Bull star for next season is not currently under consideration. Verstappen remains committed to Red Bull for now, emphasizing he is taking the season “race by race.”

After a dominant win in Japan that brought him within a point of Norris, Verstappen struggled in Bahrain, qualifying seventh and finishing behind the McLaren driver, who secured third. Reflecting on the season’s ups and downs, Verstappen acknowledged that the team no longer holds the edge it once did but is embracing the new challenges. He added that while he’s not entirely satisfied with the car's performance, the team is united in their goal to improve.
