Verstappen's Title Grip Loosens as Ferrari Eyes Monza Triumph

Posted : 29 August 2024

Max Verstappen enters the Italian Grand Prix with his dominance in Formula One under increasing scrutiny and his fourth consecutive world championship looking less assured than before the summer break. The Dutchman has not won a race since the Spanish Grand Prix in June, marking a five-race winless streak that has significantly slowed his momentum and Red Bull's once-unassailable grip on the sport. Verstappen's inability to secure victory at his home GP for the first time in four years last weekend further underscored his diminishing control over the driver's championship.

During the race at Zandvoort, Verstappen finished over 23 seconds behind Lando Norris, highlighting issues with his car that surfaced during a frustrating qualifying session. McLaren's superior setup on the day forced Verstappen to accept a humbling defeat after being overtaken on lap 18, with Verstappen later admitting that he focused on securing second place rather than risking further mistakes. Despite the recent struggles, Verstappen remains composed, emphasizing that there is no need for panic as he still leads the championship by 70 points.

McLaren's recent improvements pose a serious threat at Monza, a track where Verstappen has dominated in the past two years, particularly against Ferrari on their home turf. However, his nearest rival, Norris, dismissed the notion of overtaking Verstappen for the title as "stupid," given the reigning champion's consistent podium finishes in 10 of the 15 races this season, including seven wins. Even though Verstappen's invincibility has waned, his skill and strategic driving have kept him in contention, as noted by Red Bull team principal Christian Horner, who stressed the importance of scoring points even when victory isn't possible.

Meanwhile, Ferrari, currently third in the constructors' standings and trailing Red Bull by 64 points, are looking to overcome recent disappointments at Monza and capitalize on their improved form. Charles Leclerc's recent podium finish at Zandvoort and Carlos Sainz's fight to fifth have boosted the team's morale ahead of their home Grand Prix. Former Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso even predicted that Ferrari would be the team to beat at Monza and the upcoming Azerbaijan GP, citing their strong position in the championship race and their potential to challenge McLaren, Red Bull, and Mercedes for podium finishes.
