Verstappen, Red Bull Aim to Reclaim Dominance at Azerbaijan Grand Prix Amid Rising Pressure

Posted : 12 September 2024

Max Verstappen is aiming for a strong performance this weekend at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix as Red Bull seeks to regain their dominance in the Formula One title race. With a 62-point lead in the drivers' championship ahead of Lando Norris, Verstappen arrives in Baku looking to end a six-race winless streak that has seen Red Bull's lead over McLaren reduced to just eight points. Their last victory came in June at the Spanish Grand Prix, while Sergio Perez, Verstappen’s teammate, secured a win in Baku last year.

Red Bull's reign at the top of the constructors' championship, which has lasted since the 2022 Spanish Grand Prix, is now under threat. If McLaren outperforms them by nine points on Sunday, Red Bull's dominance could come to an end. Both Verstappen and Perez have been working hard to address the recent issues in their car's performance, with Verstappen acknowledging that Monza was a challenging race and stressing the importance of regaining form. Perez echoed similar sentiments, noting that the team has been pulling together to find solutions.

Sergio Perez, who has had a difficult season, is looking forward to racing in Baku, a venue where he has enjoyed success in the past. He is the only two-time winner on the streets of Baku and has consistently performed well there, making it a track that suits his driving style. After finishing eighth at Monza, Perez is eager to bounce back in Azerbaijan and help Red Bull regain momentum in the championship.

Ferrari also enters the Azerbaijan Grand Prix with renewed optimism following their success at Monza with an upgraded car. However, Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur emphasized the need for consistency rather than focusing on championship standings. With McLaren and Mercedes also in contention after recent victories, the fast and challenging street circuit in Baku promises a competitive race weekend. Meanwhile, Haas will see reserve driver Oliver Bearman replace Kevin Magnussen, who has been banned for accumulating 12 penalty points.
