Verstappen dominates Japanese Grand Prix practice as Gasly's crash ends session early

Posted : 22 September 2023
Alpine's Pierre Gasly suffered a crash, prematurely ending Friday practice at the Japanese Grand Prix, while Max Verstappen dominated the day.

Gasly lost control at the challenging Degner Two corner, locking a front wheel and sliding off track, eventually colliding with the barrier and losing a front wheel.

Verstappen showcased his dominance by finishing the day 0.320 seconds quicker than Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, appearing nearly unbeatable.

McLaren's Lando Norris secured third place, followed by Carlos Sainz's Ferrari.

George Russell managed fifth, indicating a challenging day for Mercedes. Lewis Hamilton struggled, finishing in 14th place, 0.501 seconds behind his teammate.

Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin claimed the sixth-fastest time, with Williams' Alex Albon and McLaren's Oscar Piastri following suit. Red Bull's Sergio Perez was ninth, a second behind Verstappen, and Alfa Romeo's Valtteri Bottas secured the 10th position.

Gasly's accident was the culmination of a challenging day for several drivers. Degner Two is renowned as one of the most difficult corners on the calendar, with drivers having to brake right after navigating the faster Degner One.

Verstappen displayed impressive form throughout the day, maintaining a significant advantage over his competitors. His performance suggested that the claims of a technical directive affecting Red Bull's performance in the previous race were unfounded.

Verstappen excelled in long-run simulations, maintaining a substantial lead over his rivals. Leclerc followed as the second fastest, comfortably ahead of Sainz, both using Ferrari's new floor.

Norris posted the fastest time on soft tires, with Alonso and Russell close behind. Hamilton, while trailing, showed improvement compared to his single-lap performance.
