Verstappen Criticizes Red Bull's Strategy Despite Surprise Qualifying Performance Ahead of Norris

Posted : 24 November 2024

Max Verstappen, a three-time world champion, expressed dissatisfaction with his Red Bull team's lack of a dedicated low-downforce rear wing for high-speed circuits like Monza and Las Vegas. He pointed out that the team had "thrown away two race weekends" by not preparing a suitable wing for these tracks, which significantly impacted their performance.

Despite this, Verstappen was pleasantly surprised to qualify ahead of his title rival, Lando Norris, and shared the third row of the grid with him for the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Verstappen, who holds a 62-point lead over Norris with three races to go, acknowledged that Mercedes, led by George Russell, was the fastest in qualifying.

Norris, who qualified behind Verstappen, was downbeat about his chances in the race, admitting that he struggled with balance and couldn't find the right setup. He said that breaking into the top four felt "out of reach" due to Mercedes' dominance and his own difficulties with the car. Nevertheless, Norris vowed to give his best in the race, regardless of his championship standing. He remained focused on pushing to the end, committed to making the most of every opportunity.

Verstappen, on the other hand, was critical of Red Bull's decision to use a rear wing from 2022, explaining that the team had opted not to develop a specific one for circuits with long straights due to the constraints of the budget cap.

He felt that this lack of an updated wing had cost the team valuable performance in two recent races. The Dutch driver suggested that the decision should be reconsidered in the future to avoid similar setbacks.

Despite the challenges, Verstappen was relatively content with his qualifying performance, particularly given the circumstances. He admitted that the adjustments made to their rear wing for Las Vegas were not entirely sufficient and that they still faced a handicap compared to their rivals.

Verstappen was fortunate that Lewis Hamilton did not put in a fast lap, allowing him to maintain his position ahead of Norris. Nonetheless, he felt satisfied with his own laps and was prepared to tackle the race with the available setup.
