Max Verstappen has expressed confidence in the adjustments Red Bull has made to their car as he aims for a fifth consecutive Formula 1 title. The Dutch driver secured his fourth championship last season with a strong start, though McLaren, particularly Lando Norris, gained performance later in the year.
Verstappen acknowledged that Red Bull’s initial development approach did not deliver the expected results, prompting necessary changes. He remains optimistic that the team has now taken the right direction, but he emphasized the need to maximize the car's potential in its final season under the current regulations.
The new RB21 car is set for its first track run during a filming day in Bahrain, ahead of the official pre-season testing at the same venue. While Red Bull has released studio images of the car, they were taken in low light to conceal aerodynamic details.
Verstappen remains motivated for the season, recalling how Red Bull overcame challenges last year to clinch the title. He stressed the importance of continuous improvement and is eager to see how their updated design performs on track. If he secures another title, Verstappen will join Michael Schumacher as only the second driver in history to win five consecutive F1 championships.
This season marks Red Bull’s first campaign without legendary designer Adrian Newey, who will join Aston Martin in March. Verstappen downplayed concerns about Newey’s departure, stating that the team must move forward and trust the engineers currently in place.
While he acknowledged Newey’s immense contributions, Verstappen emphasized that Formula 1 is a team effort and expressed excitement for his former colleague’s new challenge. Red Bull’s success this season will depend on how well the remaining team members adapt and continue their dominance in the sport.
The team has also undergone a major change in its driver lineup, with Liam Lawson replacing Sergio Perez after the Mexican driver’s underwhelming performance. The New Zealander has accepted his role as Verstappen’s supporting teammate and is focused on helping Red Bull reclaim the constructors’ championship.
Lawson stated that his primary responsibility is to contribute to the team’s overall success, ensuring they have the strongest possible car throughout the season. His personal ambitions remain secondary to Red Bull’s primary objective of maintaining their dominance in both the drivers' and constructors' standings.
