Toyota Gazoo Racing team principal compares Kalle Rovanperä to Sébastien Loeb after dominant Rally Estonia performance

Posted : 24 July 2023
Jari-Matti Latvala, the team principal of Toyota Gazoo Racing, has drawn comparisons between Kalle Rovanperä and nine-time WRC champion Sébastien Loeb after Rovanperä's dominant performance at Rally Estonia last weekend.

Rovanperä and his co-driver Jonne Halttunen were unstoppable as they secured victory at the same rally where they had clinched their first FIA World Rally Championship triumph in 2021, making Rovanperä the youngest driver to win a WRC rally at the age of 21.

Throughout the event, reigning champion Rovanperä took the lead on Friday afternoon and then effortlessly extended his advantage over Thierry Neuville, winning by an impressive 52.7 seconds in a GR Yaris. Such was his domination that he posted 13 consecutive fastest times over the final two days of the rally.

Jari-Matti Latvala compared Rovanperä's drive to that of Sébastien Loeb when the nine-time champion won all 12 stages of Rally de France in 2005. He praised Rovanperä and Jonne for being "in the flow zone," a state where everything seems to come naturally and effortlessly, resulting in outstanding performance.

Latvala highlighted that finding this zone is a remarkable feat, and Rovanperä's incredible performance at Rally Estonia was reminiscent of Loeb's domination in Corsica in 2005.

Latvala also expressed that Rally Estonia is Rovanperä's strongest rally in the championship, and he considers it to be like a home rally for the young driver.

Surprisingly, Rovanperä described his approach during the rally as "quite simple" once he got past the challenging opening day, where he had the road-opening duties.

He explained that after Friday's challenging stages, they found a comfortable pace that allowed them to maintain their performance without taking significant risks, leading to their impressive victory.

Currently, Rovanperä leads the standings by 55 points after the eighth round of the 13-round championship. His remarkable performance at Rally Estonia has solidified his position as a top contender in the World Rally Championship.
