Prominent sports figures, including golfer Rory McIlroy, boxer Anthony Joshua, Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold, and NFL star Patrick Mahomes, have united to invest in the Alpine Formula 1 team.
This collaboration comes as part of Otro Capital's ownership, which already possesses a 24% stake in the team alongside RedBird Capital and actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Their initial investment valued the Renault-owned team at approximately £706 million, and the addition of these star names is aimed at enhancing Alpine's global presence and expanding its fan base.
Rory McIlroy, the world's second-ranked golfer, expressed his excitement about the venture, stating, "Passion for excellence on the golf course has led me to admire the same pursuit in Formula 1." He sees this partnership as a way to unite his love for sports and competition with the relentless drive to be the best.
Meanwhile, two-time unified world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua emphasized the strategic opportunity to invest in Alpine, recognizing the team's heritage and the sport's global growth as a compelling proposition.
Alpine, which secured fourth place in the world championship last year, has faced a challenging 2023 season and currently ranks sixth out of ten teams in the constructors' standings. Their disappointing performance led to significant changes within the team, including the dismissal of the CEO, team principal, and sporting director. The investment by these sports stars aims to revitalize the Alpine team and elevate its position in the highly competitive world of Formula 1.
