Spanish Grand Prix: Max Verstappen on pole after dramatic qualifying session

Posted : 03 June 2023
Max Verstappen of Red Bull won the pole position in a dramatic and eventful Spanish Grand Prix qualifying that included a collision between the Mercedes cars.

After passing Lewis Hamilton at over 200 mph on the straight during the second practise session and injuring Hamilton's front wing, George Russell is the subject of an inquiry.

Despite making it to the final session, Hamilton could only finish in sixth.

On a grid with six different teams represented in the top six positions, Lando Norris of McLaren came in third after an impressive effort by Ferrari's Carlos Sainz in second.

Although Pierre Gasly of Alpine finished fourth quickest, he is still being investigated and is probably going to face consequences for two different impeding incidents. Lance Stroll of Aston Martin finished sixth.

Charles Leclerc, Sainz's teammate, was in 19th place and was grumbling about his vehicle.

Russell was eliminated in the second practise session together with Red Bull's Sergio Perez, who had been hurt by a spin. They will start 11th and 12th, respectively.

Fernando Alonso was another who had a diversion. At the very beginning of qualifying, he broke his floor with an error in the quick last turn and was only able to post the ninth-fastest time, three places behind teammate Lance Stroll, whom he had previously outqualified at every race this season.
