Spanish Grand Prix: Max Verstappen leads first in practice

In the opening practise session for the Spanish Grand Prix, Max Verstappen set the pace with little indication of the genuine competitive landscape.
 
The world champion outpaced teammate Sergio Perez, who is 39 points behind the Dutchman in the standings, by a huge 0.768 seconds.
 
The Alpha Tauri of Nyck de Vries, which was separated by Alpine's Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly, finished third and fifth, respectively.
 
On a revamped version of the Barcelona circuit, many teams were testing improvements.
 
The circuit now contains two quick right-handers to conclude the lap, as it did in its initial incarnation from 1991 to 2006. The fussy chicane in the last sector, which was inserted in 2007, has been replaced.
 
The last turn wasn't taken flat-out in the first practise, contrary to speculations to the contrary.
