Max Verstappen of Red Bull won the Spanish Grand Prix with ease, giving him five victories in as many races to grab the season lead.
With his 40th career victory, the Dutchman now has a 53-point advantage over teammate Sergio Perez in the championship standings.
On a positive day for Mercedes, Verstappen was followed home by Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.
Russell hung on for his first podium result of the year despite Perez's surge in the final circuits.
In the improved Ferrari, Carlos Sainz dropped from second on the starting grid to fifth at the finish line, losing fourth to Perez in the dying laps.
After his final pit stop, Fernando Alonso made a strong move to pass three other drivers and move up to seventh place at the finish line.
Alonso had the opportunity to overtake Lance Stroll, an Aston Martin teammate, for sixth place, but he chose to hold back and stay in place. He even used the team radio to inform Stroll that there was "no risk" that he would try to pass the Canadian.
