Sebastien Ogier secured a historic sixth victory at the Rally of Portugal by maintaining his lead on the demanding gravel tracks. Piloting a Toyota Yaris, the French driver surpassed Markku Alen's record, who had clinched five titles with Fiat and Lancia in the 1970s and 1980s.
Acknowledging the significance of his achievement, Ogier expressed respect for Alen, considering him a legend in the sport. Reflecting on the persistent inquiries about breaking the record, Ogier stated, "He is a legend, but I heard for many years 'when will you beat this record?'" Despite challenges faced by his team over the weekend, Ogier was pleased to contribute valuable points, describing the rally as a positive outcome amid difficulties.
Competing part-time in the 2024 world championship, Ogier finished 7.9 seconds ahead of Ott Tanak, salvaging a challenging weekend for his team. The rally saw setbacks for teammates Kalle Rovanpera and Takamoto Katsuta, with Rovanpera crashing out on Saturday and Katsuta encountering suspension issues.
Meanwhile, championship leader Thierry Neuville secured third place, extending his lead over Elfyn Evans to 24 points after completing five of the 13 events. Evans, finishing more than six minutes behind in sixth place, faced a considerable gap from the pace in the other Toyota.
