Sebastien Ogier Clinches 10th Monte Carlo Rally Win

Posted : 27 January 2025

Sebastien Ogier claimed a record-extending 10th victory at the Monte Carlo Rally on Sunday, following his "lucky star" and dedicating the win to his late uncle. The 41-year-old French driver, an eight-time world champion, took the win in the season opener he first won back in 2009.

Ogier, who is competing part-time this season, secured the victory with a 20-second lead over his Toyota teammate, Elfyn Evans, who finished in second. Ogier's mastery of the Monte Carlo roads, which he knows intimately, helped him maintain his dominance in the event.

Ogier was emotional after the win, saying, "I don't know where to start, what a weekend!" He attributed his success to his uncle, who passed away a year ago, believing that his uncle was guiding him to this remarkable achievement.

The French driver, who has made the rally a personal fortress, is unsure whether this will be his last attempt at Monte Carlo, acknowledging that it would be a fitting way to conclude his career. Ogier's countryman Adrien Fourmaux completed the podium in third, driving for Hyundai.

The 2023 WRC season moves to Sweden next month, with Ogier leading the standings with 33 points, followed by Evans with 26 points and Fourmaux in third. Ogier's victory puts him in a strong position to challenge for another world championship title.

However, defending world champion Thierry Neuville had a challenging start to the season, finishing sixth after encountering issues like an early crash and a deflated tire. Neuville remained optimistic, looking ahead to Sweden, while 2022 and 2023 champion Kalle Rovanpera also faced setbacks, finishing fourth after a disappointing weekend.

Ogier's performance included wins on the closing stages of the rally, including stage 16 and the final power stage, where he widened his lead to 18.5 seconds over Evans. Fourmaux's third-place finish marked a promising start with Hyundai, and the team is optimistic about the rest of the season.

The 2025 WRC calendar will see an expanded schedule with new events in Saudi Arabia, the Canary Islands, and Paraguay, while Croatia and Poland will be absent. The next round of the season will take place in Sweden from February 13 to 16, known for its snow-covered roads.
