Carlos Sainz expressed his desire to help Ferrari win the Formula One constructors' title for the first time in 16 years, calling it the perfect way to say goodbye to the team after Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Sainz is preparing to depart from Ferrari, making way for seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton at the historic team. With Ferrari 21 points behind McLaren in the standings, Sainz knows the challenge is tough but remains hopeful for a final triumph with Ferrari.
The Spaniard revealed how much the opportunity to claim the constructors' title would mean to him, describing it as the ideal farewell to the team he has dedicated his best efforts to for the past four years.
He reflected on the incredible experience of being part of Ferrari and emphasized how meaningful it would be to end his time with the team on such a high note. “It would be the perfect sign-off, the perfect goodbye,” he said, acknowledging his deep connection with the team.
While aware that Ferrari’s task is challenging, Sainz remained optimistic. He acknowledged that for Ferrari to secure the title, both he and teammate Charles Leclerc would need to finish on the podium, ideally in first and second places.
Sainz also hoped to sign off with a victory, although he recognized that perfect performances from both himself and the team, along with misfortune for McLaren, would be necessary to pull off the feat.
Sainz, who has won two races this season, took a moment to praise Ferrari’s mechanics, particularly highlighting their passion and deep understanding of racing. He expressed admiration for how well Ferrari’s team grasps strategy and the intricacies of each race
. "They are even a bit famous when they return to Maranello, because they are Ferrari mechanics," Sainz said, underscoring the unique atmosphere within the team that sets it apart from others in Formula 1.
