Ryo Hirakawa, the Japanese driver and 2022 24 Hours of Le Mans winner with Toyota, will join Alpine's test and reserve roster for the upcoming Formula One season.
As part of his role, Hirakawa will participate in the first practice session for the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka in April. Additionally, he will support the team through simulator work and involvement in the Previous Car (TPC) program.
Hirakawa’s addition brings a wealth of experience to Alpine, expanding the team’s talent pool alongside existing reserve driver, Estonian F2 racer Paul Aron.
Team principal Oliver Oakes highlighted the value of Hirakawa’s varied racing background, which will strengthen the team’s options throughout the year. Last season, Hirakawa was a reserve driver for McLaren.
The Alpine F1 team, based in Enstone, England, has already confirmed Pierre Gasly and Jack Doohan for the 2025 race lineup, although speculation about Doohan's future continues.
Reports have suggested that Argentine Franco Colapinto, who raced for Williams in 2024, could be considered for a role.
Alpine's executive advisor Flavio Briatore reaffirmed that Gasly and Doohan will start the year as the team's primary drivers, with decisions to be made later in the season.
