Ryan Blaney Secures Victory at Pocono Raceway in The Great American Getaway 400

Posted : 15 July 2024

Defending NASCAR Cup Series champion Ryan Blaney claimed his second victory in five races by winning The Great American Getaway 400 at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania, on Sunday afternoon. Blaney's No. 12 Team Penske Racing Ford surged ahead on a restart with 23 laps remaining, comfortably defeating Denny Hamlin by 1.312 seconds. This victory, which follows his win last month at Iowa Speedway, secured Blaney's spot in the playoffs.

Blaney's triumph marked his second win at Pocono in 15 starts and the 12th of his career. His first-ever victory was on June 11, 2017, at the Pennsylvania speedway, driving the Wood Brothers' iconic No. 21 car. The race saw Alex Bowman, William Byron, and Joey Logano finishing behind the top two in a competition characterized by eight caution flags and multiple lead changes.

Joe Gibbs Racing's Ty Gibbs, who secured his second career pole position on Saturday, led the first 17 laps before handing over the lead to teammate Martin Truex Jr. Truex's Toyota pulled away to a commanding lead, allowing him to win his third stage of the 2024 season. However, Ross Chastain, precariously close to the points cut line, hit the wall on Lap 53 while running 21st and was forced to retire from the race in 36th place.

Denny Hamlin, opting for a two-tire stop, led the middle portion of Stage 2 with Josh Berry and Gibbs close behind. Hamlin passed Berry on Lap 67 and built a 2.25-second lead over the next five laps. He maintained his dominance to win Stage 2, finishing nearly six seconds ahead of runner-up Chase Elliott. The race saw multiple incidents, including a collision involving Kyle Busch and Corey LaJoie, and a late-race engine failure for Gibbs that brought out the final caution with 29 laps to go, setting up Blaney's decisive run to the finish.
