Rodney Childers, Spire Motorsports unexpectedly split in April 2025

Posted : 25 April 2025

Spire Motorsports sent shockwaves through the NASCAR community in April 2025 with the unexpected announcement that they had parted ways with veteran crew chief Rodney Childers. The news broke just days before the Talladega Superspeedway race weekend, catching fans and insiders alike by surprise. The split takes immediate effect, ending a brief collaboration between Childers and the team.

Childers, who joined Spire Motorsports at the beginning of the 2025 season, had been overseeing operations for the No. 7 car driven by Justin Haley. His tenure, however, lasted just nine races following his departure from Stewart-Haas Racing. Despite high hopes for the pairing, the partnership didn’t yield the expected results and was brought to an early conclusion.

In the wake of Childers’ exit, Spire Motorsports has tapped Ryan Sparks, the organization’s Director of Competition, to step in as Haley’s crew chief for the remainder of the season. Sparks brings familiarity with the team’s internal dynamics and will aim to provide stability through the rest of the Cup Series campaign.

Addressing the unexpected change, Childers acknowledged the disappointment but remained reflective and gracious. “Sometimes things don’t go the way you hoped,” he said. “This just wasn’t a fit that worked out for either side, and that’s okay. I’m thankful for the opportunity and the people I worked with during my time at Spire Motorsports.”

Childers also expressed gratitude to Chevrolet, Rick Hendrick, and Hendrick Motorsports for their support during his tenure. He extended appreciation to NASCAR officials and the fans, emphasizing how much their encouragement meant to him. His statement reflected the experience of a seasoned professional taking an unexpected turn in stride.

With his sudden availability, speculation is already swirling about where Childers could land next. Known for his technical acumen and leadership, he remains a highly respected figure in the Cup Series garage. While several teams might be eager to bring him on board, he has indicated that he plans to step back for a while and focus on personal priorities.

For now, Childers intends to take some time to be with family and friends while considering his next steps. He left the door open for a return to the sport, hinting that he’s open to wherever the future—and faith—might lead him. The NASCAR community will no doubt be watching closely for his next move.
