Renault will cease producing Formula One engines starting in 2026, marking the end of nearly 50 years in the sport. Alpine, Renault's racing team, confirmed the news, which had been hinted at by former team principal Bruno Famin earlier in July. From 2026, the team is expected to switch to Mercedes power units.
Renault has a rich history in F1, having made its debut in 1977 and becoming the pioneer of the turbo engine in the sport. Throughout its time in Formula One, Renault achieved five drivers' championships and six constructors' titles, cementing its legacy in motorsport.
The Renault engine facility at Viry-Chatillon, located near Paris, will undergo a transformation to focus on engineering future Renault and Alpine road cars. According to Alpine’s statement, the plant will continue its Formula One engine development until the conclusion of the 2025 season.
