Red Bull's Max Verstappen faces five-place grid penalty for excessive gearbox usage
Posted : 28 July 2023
Red Bull's Max Verstappen will receive a five-place grid penalty for the upcoming Belgian Grand Prix due to exceeding the permitted usage of gearbox parts. The penalty will only apply to Sunday's main race and not Saturday's 'sprint' event.
Although the penalty has not been officially confirmed, reputable sources within Red Bull have verified the decision. Despite the setback, Verstappen's dominant form suggests that the penalty is unlikely to significantly affect his chances of winning at Spa-Francorchamps.
Currently leading the championship by a substantial 110 points, Verstappen has emerged victorious in nine out of the 11 races in the 2023 season. Moreover, he is on a remarkable streak of seven consecutive grand prix wins, just two short of the all-time record set by Sebastian Vettel in 2013 for Red Bull.
Last weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix saw Red Bull secure their 12th consecutive Formula 1 championship race win, breaking a record previously held by McLaren since 1988.
Although the penalty will force Verstappen to start behind at least five other cars, his previous performance at the Belgian Grand Prix offers hope. Last year, he won the race from 14th on the grid, showcasing an extraordinary display of dominance under F1's new regulations introduced in 2022.
Lando Norris of McLaren, who finished second to Verstappen in Hungary, expressed his belief that even if Red Bull were to start last in every race, they have the capability to charge through the field.
The penalty stems from F1's regulations, which limit teams to four instances of specific gearbox components. Verstappen has exceeded the allowable usage for one of these components, though the exact part responsible for the penalty has not been disclosed at this time.
