Red Bull Faces Pressure to Retain Verstappen Amid Car Performance Concerns

Posted : 14 April 2025

Red Bull's Helmut Marko has voiced serious concern over Max Verstappen’s future with the team following a disappointing performance at the Bahrain Grand Prix. Verstappen, who started seventh and eventually finished sixth, found himself at the back of the field at one point, a stark contrast to his dominant win from pole position in Bahrain just a year earlier.

The lack of pace has now dropped the Dutch driver to third place in the drivers' standings, trailing McLaren’s Lando Norris by eight points. Marko admitted in an interview with Sky Germany that urgent car improvements are needed to keep Verstappen competitive.

Tension within the team seemed to escalate post-race, with Verstappen’s manager, Raymond Vermeulen, reportedly seen shouting at Marko in the Red Bull garage.

Verstappen himself expressed growing frustration, saying he now feels like he's merely participating in the championship rather than competing for it. Despite being contracted to Red Bull until 2028, Verstappen's deal contains a release clause, which has fueled speculation about a possible move.

He has been linked to teams like Mercedes and Aston Martin, the latter of which now includes Red Bull’s former technical chief Adrian Newey and is set to partner with Honda, Red Bull’s engine supplier.

Team principal Christian Horner described the Bahrain race as a rough outing, citing technical issues like a malfunctioning overhead light system in the pit box that further hindered Verstappen’s progress. Horner stressed the need for immediate development to remain competitive in the long season ahead.

While acknowledging that nothing went their way during the race, he remained cautiously optimistic, pointing out that the team is still within striking distance in the championship.

Looking ahead, Red Bull must act swiftly to close the gap before the season slips away. The upcoming Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in Jeddah will be crucial as they try to regroup and deliver a stronger performance. With pressure mounting both internally and externally, the next few races may play a pivotal role in determining whether Verstappen remains with the team beyond this season.
